Good medical practice 2024

We’ve published an updated version of Good medical practice, the professional standards for all doctors in the UK.

The standards have a stronger focus on behaviours and values which create respectful, fair and supportive workplaces.

The current version of Good medical practice will continue to apply to doctors on the medical register until the updated version comes into effect on 30 January 2024.

How the updated standards are structured

The four domains in Good medical practice are all equally important in describing what makes a good medical professional.

How we reviewed Good medical practice

To develop the new standards, we listened to and acted on feedback from thousands of healthcare professionals, patients and others supporting the UK’s health services. So they are a shared agreement of good practice.

The Good medical practice advisory forum

Our independent advisory forum has shaped our thinking throughout every step of the review. This group of 12 experts from outside of the GMC have given us perspectives from across the UK and from a range of specialist areas.

Inclusive and accessible standards

We took care to put equality, diversity and inclusion at the centre of the Good medical practice review. Read the equality analysis in this section for detailed information on this.
