Being honest in your application
You must give us the evidence or information we request. If you do not, it could delay your application or put your future registration at risk.
Registration and work history
You must give us details of all the professional regulatory authorities you've held registration with since you were last on the register of PAs and AAs. This includes regulators within and outside of the UK.
The work history information we ask for will depend on how long you have been off the register. In some cases, we’ll only ask for information about healthcare roles. In other cases, we may ask for your full work history since you last held registration. This includes explanations for any gaps in employment. Your application form will explain the information you need to give us.
By healthcare role, we mean patient-facing work in healthcare that involves direct interaction and engagement with patients – providing care, support, or services that directly affect their wellbeing.
If you've been off the register for less than 90 days
You’ll need to give us your work history if:
- you've worked as a PA or AA, or in another healthcare role, anywhere in the world, since you've been off the register
- your role was not regulated by a professional regulatory body.
If you've been off the register for more than 90 days
You must give us your full work history from the date you were last on the register of PAs and AAs. This includes healthcare and non-healthcare role or periods of unemployment. Please do not leave breaks of more than 28 days.
Your fitness to practise declaration
We need to make sure you’re fit to practise before you can re-enter the register of PAs and AAs. If we decide that you're fit to practise, we'll grant you unrestricted registration to work as a PA or AA in the UK. We have no power to grant re-entry with conditions attached.
Before you answer the questions, you should read our guide on what to tell us when you apply.
We only need to know about things that could affect your ability to work as a PA or AA or lower the public’s confidence in the professions. The guide will help you decide what you do and don’t need to tell us. Just because you tell us about something doesn’t mean you can’t re-enter the register. We treat all information you give us confidentially.
When you sign your declaration and submit your application, you acknowledge that the GMC will complete global background checks on you.
Your insurance and indemnity declaration
You'll also need to confirm that you have, or will have by the time you start practising as a registered PA or AA in the UK, an indemnity arrangement, insurance policy, or a combination of both. This must provide appropriate and adequate cover for your practice as a PA or AA.
Before you submit your application, you should read our guidance on insurance and indemnity.
