Our culture

Our story goes all the way back to 1858, and we’ve learned a lot along this journey.

Our vision is rooted in the people we work with and for, and our values underpin everything we do. We strive to be effective, relevant and compassionate – for patients and the public, as a regulator, and as an employer.

Our values

Our values underpin everything we do.

  • Integrity – we are honest and share what we see. We listen to our partners, but remain independent.
  • Excellence – we are a learning organisation, committed to achieving high standards.
  • Collaboration – we work with others to support safe, high-quality care.
  • Fairness – we respect people and treat them without prejudice.
  • Transparency – we are open and account for our actions.

Our behaviours

Our OneGMC behaviours set out how we expect everyone at the GMC and MPTS to work together.

They are based around four themes:

  • Being inclusive.
  • Continuously learning.
  • Thriving together.
  • Leading the way.

Leadership

Leadership skills underpin the success of our strategy and provide strong foundations for our future.

We know that growth and change will only continue to happen and be sustained if we experiment with new ways of thinking, behaving and communicating. Our leaders encourage this of others, but we believe we’re all leaders and can make a difference.

Examples of leadership behaviours we’re investing in:

  • Closing the gap between knowing and doing.
  • Authenticity and engagement.
  • Balancing goals and team awareness.
  • Decision-making strategies.
  • Handling change, both within the GMC and the wider world.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

We’re committed to fostering a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) in everything we do.

  • We aim to treat anyone who we interact with fairly, without bias or discrimination
  • We use our standards to support fairness in the education and training of doctors and in treatment and care for patients
  • We aim to make sure professionals experience fair, and inclusive treatment in their education and training.

As a regulator, this means playing an active role in supporting healthcare systems to address inequalities.

As an employer, it means creating and developing a fair and inclusive work environment, where everyone is valued, has a voice, and can be the best they can be – from the recruitment and selection process onwards, to induction and onboarding, training, learning and career development.

As part of this, we’re a Disability Confident employer, committed to playing an active role in changing and improving attitudes, cultures and behaviours connected to disability.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR)

We invest in our people and create an inclusive environment, so we can achieve our ambitions. We work with others to make socially responsible decisions, supporting a sustainable environment and healthy communities

We work hard to be fair and inclusive in all aspects of our work and aim to embed sustainability, social impact and ethics in everything we do.

Our commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) includes:

  • being environmentally friendly – how we become a netzero organisation and learn from others how to avoid the pitfalls
  • supporting our communities through volunteering schemes that everyone can participate in, wherever they are
  • ethical procurement practices and regular reviews of our ethical investment options in our pension schemes
  • training and mentoring and offering apprenticeships for people from underrepresented groups.

Health and wellbeing

We know there’s no ‘one size fits all’ solution to health and wellbeing at work. That’s why we empower our people to manage their personal health and wellbeing depending on their needs, within a safe and supportive environment.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is a high priority for us. We have robust arrangements to protect and promote the welfare of children and adults at risk. We say that ‘safeguarding is everybody’s business’: it’s a shared responsibility for everyone working at or on behalf of the GMC, including colleagues, contractors, and council members.
