Early careers roles with us offer a fantastic opportunity to build a meaningful and rewarding start to a professional journey with us. 

What you’ll do: Through tailored programmes you’ll develop skills, experience and knowledge in a friendly and supportive environment – and be on a springboard to be part of our future. 

Apprentices build the skills for a first role with us or for a career change. Apprentices who qualify with us typically secure a permanent early career role in their area of specialism and go on to develop their professional journey with us. 

Interns develop a significant range of employability skills. If you’re in your final two years at university in any degree subject (or equivalent) and would like to understand what it’s like to work at a healthcare regulator, this could be the right choice for you. 

You’ll need to have enthusiasm and an interest in making a difference, be organised and able to work in a team, and be comfortable building relationships with a diverse range of people.

Our administration and support teams provide vital services and support to over 1,600 staff and 1,900 associates.

• Our People team looks after staff-related matters, payroll, recruitment, learning and development, and contract arrangements for associates.
• Our Finance team are responsible for paying staff, processing expenses, administering the purchase of goods and services, and processing fees.
• Our Facilities team manages our seven buildings across the UK. They work to deliver meetings and room logistics, the management of incoming visitors, document services, health and safety, and emergency procedures.
• Our Contact Centre team handles over 180,000 calls and emails a year, from doctors, physician associates (PAs), anaesthesia associates (AAs), employers and members of the public. They use the latest technology from home or the office.
• Our business support teams help connect different parts of the organisation and provide a wide-range of administrative support.

Registration and revalidation teams

These teams handle queries, process registrations, and manage licensing and revalidation for doctors, physician associates (PAs), and anaesthesia associates (AAs). They make sure professionals meet the necessary requirements to practise safely in the UK.

What you’ll do: Our Contact Centre handles GMC customer queries, updates details, and processes Certificates of Current Professional Status (CCPS). The Assessment Delivery Team manages exams for doctors, PAs, and AAs, while the Assessment Development Team maintains assessment content. The International Applications Team oversees registration for European and overseas graduates, and the Revalidation Team handles licensing, revalidation, and appeals. The Specialist Applications Team processes specialist and GP register applications, while the VERL Team manages registration changes, voluntary removals, and licence updates for doctors, PAs, and AAs.

Policy

These teams develop creative, proportionate, pragmatic and evidence-based policy or strategy. They make sure our processes and guidance support the delivery of our regulatory policy programme and overall strategy. 

What you’ll do: you’ll work closely with colleagues and external stakeholders to deliver our corporate strategy, our business plans or sector-specific policies. You may help set standards for education providers, so graduates, doctors in training meet the outcomes expected of them. Or research, consult and analyse to develop policy, guidance and resources.

Project management

These teams work to assure the successful delivery of key programmes and projects, and advocate for change and improvement.

What you’ll do: you’ll manage or support the successful delivery of assigned projects within timescales and to budget, based on business needs. Projects may focus on changes to our legal framework, or the redesign of our processes and services. You’ll produce and monitor project plans and documentation and proactively engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, working collaboratively to share information and ideas.

Legal

These teams support investigations and manage cases, and are a trusted source of expertise, advice, and training to help make sure we adhere to relevant law and regulations.

What you’ll do: you may gather evidence and construct cases for presentation before a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) Investigation Committee and Registration Tribunal. You could also be accountable for conducting litigation - including defending applications for judicial review and appeals to the High Court, instructing Counsel as appropriate.

Investigation

If serious concerns are raised with us about a doctor’s, physician associates (PA)’s or anaesthesia associate (AA)’s behaviour, health or performance, we can investigate to determine whether patient safety, or the public’s confidence in doctors, PAs or AAs, are at risk.

What you’ll do: you’ll manage investigations, including criminal conviction cases and cases likely to be referred to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS). You’ll also manage cases relating to a doctor’s, PA’s, or AA’s health, or advise colleagues on how to deal with someone who’s vulnerable. Or you may be part of a team training and supporting improvement in the investigations teams. 

Standards and ethics

These teams help doctors, physician associates (PAs), anaesthesia associates (AAs), and key stakeholders to navigate ethical and legal decisions in practice, often working alongside our senior leaders.

What you’ll do: when doctors, PAs, and AAs look to us to help them make the right decisions and navigate difficult situations, you and the team will translate and interpret our policies, and consult others to find the right answers to their questions.

Communications and engagement

These teams help increase the impact of our work and strengthen our engagement with customers and partners to deliver our work as a regulator. 

What you’ll do: you’ll work to engage our target audiences, drawing insights into their needs, and influencing behaviours through our communication channels. As part of this, you may manage relationships with national bodies in each country of the UK. In general, you’ll make sure that what we say is consistent and coordinated and represents our work positively and accurately. 

Our data and technology teams provide specialist technical support for the development of insights from our data and to run our systems in the most efficient ways.

Information systems

Our information systems teams are passionate about technology. They work to manage and support our computer and connectivity systems in the most efficient ways. 

What you’ll do: you’ll contribute to delivering an innovative portfolio of technology, including in areas such as programming, business change, information security and compliance, digital archiving, databases, and web applications. You’ll be part of a team working with a wide range of people across the organisation to plan systems for our future. 

Data, research and insight

Our data, research and insight teams help senior internal decision makers, policy teams, and external stakeholders make solid, evidence-based decisions. 

What you’ll do: you’ll produce usable and appropriate evidence quickly, build data dashboards, carry out research and evaluation, and develop insight from qualitative and quantitative intelligence. 

Our GMC associates have both medical and non-medical backgrounds and bring their expertise to help deliver our key functions. 

There are several different roles that members of the public, legally qualified professionals, doctors, physician associates (PAs), and anaesthesia associates (AAs) can apply for.

They support our work in many different ways – for example: 

• taking part in tribunals responsible for assessing appeals regarding our registration or investigation processes
• joining quality assurance visits to review the work of medical schools, physician associates (PAs), anaesthesia associates (AAs) course providers, deaneries and health authorities 
• assessing a doctor’s, PA’s or AA’s ability to practise safely due to performance or ill-health
• examining candidates wanting to practise medicine in the UK, or helping to develop assessment materials 
• providing advice in support of our regulatory functions.

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) runs hearings that make independent decisions about whether doctors, physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) are fit to practise in the UK. It operates separately from the investigatory role of the General Medical Council (GMC).

Its tribunals can restrict a doctor’s, PA’s or AA’s practice, or stop them from working in the UK.

All MPTS tribunals are made up of registrant and non-registrant (lay) people, they are appointed as MPTS tribunal members. A registrant is someone registered with the GMC and who holds a licence to practise.

The MPTS has around 300 associates who bring a range of diverse perspectives to the role. View the current list of MPTS tribunal members.

MPTS tribunal members are appointed through open competition against agreed competencies. Applicants must demonstrate that they meet these competencies, and in particular:

• demonstrable integrity
• experience and ability of reaching considered and unbiased decisions affecting other people.

It’s not necessary to have prior experience of sitting on tribunals to become a tribunal member, providing you have the competencies required for the role. Our priority is to appoint people with the right skills.
