Cancelling or amending your booking, and our approach to other exam disruptions

How do you cancel your exam booking?

You can cancel, or move your exam booking, by emailing us at Exams@gmc-uk.org.

You can find more information on cancellation fees on our Fees page in the Assessment fees tab.

Can I swap my existing booking?

If you hold a booking already, you can request to move your booking to another date by contacting the Assessment team for help.

We may deduct a cancellation fee for cancelling your place or to swap your booking. You can view the cancellation fee in the test fees tab.

Are you entitled to a refund of the cancellation fee?

We'll not issue a refund if you cancel or move your place within six weeks of your booked test date. If you cancel your place more than six weeks before your test we will refund your fees minus a cancellation fee.

Please note, you will not be entitled to a refund for the AARA-KT where we have received a CCA submission from your UK course provider, however we may be able to move your exam date.

We will consider giving you a full refund where exceptional circumstances arise that prevent you from attending the assessment, such as ill health or bereavement.

If you believe you are entitled to a refund, you should first request to cancel your place and then email evidence of your circumstances. We will then consider whether we can refund your cancellation fee.

Read our information below about what to do if you become unwell on the day of the assessment.

What if you become unwell, or experience unexpected circumstances during your exam?

Read our information about what to do on the day if you become unwell or experience unexpected and/or exceptional circumstances during the exam.

By attending the assessment and choosing to start the knowledge test, you are confirming you are feeling well enough to be assessed. This is widely referred to as ‘fit to sit’.

If this changes during the knowledge test at any point, and you are not well enough to continue the exam, you must tell an exam official immediately.

What if the exam is cancelled by the GMC or their exam providers?

There may be rare occasions where it’s not possible for us to run an assessment and it’s necessary for us to cancel. Should this occur, all affected candidates will be contacted with as much notice as possible. Any booking fees will be automatically refunded, and where possible, the opportunity to book an alternative date will be offered.

The GMC will not be responsible for any expenses (such as costs for visas, travel or accommodation) incurred by any candidates in such an event, and we’re unable to offer reimbursement or compensation.

What if your eligibility to attempt the AARA-KT runs out due to exceptional circumstances beyond your control?

Our eligibility periods allow candidates significant time and opportunity to attempt the assessment.

However, we are aware that occasionally there are exceptional circumstances which impact a candidate’s ability to attempt the assessment within these periods. These include things such as the outbreak of war, severe and ongoing health issues, challenges related to pregnancy/maternity, ongoing travel restrictions, and mandatory military service.

If any of these issues impact you, please contact us at exams@gmc-uk.org as soon as possible. We will then consider what support we can offer you.
