Education data reporting tool help

How do I get to the results?

Upon opening the Education Data reporting tool you will see the summary dashboard. Select the 'NTS' tab at the top of the page to access the national training survey results.

What types of reports can I access?

Main reports

The main reports show indicator results in a colour-coded grid. The results can be viewed in the following ways:

Multiple year view (trend analysis):

  • Only available for trainee results
  • Shows side-by-side results for all years from 2012 onwards
  • Allows you to compare these results and identify any trends
  • Click into the mean score to see the specific question responses that make up the indicator score (question item reports)

Example query: have local changes impacted trainee perception of their training over time?

Single year view (outlier analysis):

  • Available for trainee and trainer results
  • Outliers are colour-coded (red for below outliers and green for above outliers)
  • Click into the mean score to see the specific question responses that make up the indicator score (question item reports)
  • You can also click on 'all results' for more detail.

Example query: How has my specialty performed in Scotland this year?

You can compare results for trainees and trainers by exporting a trainer report and then building and exporting the same report in the single-year trainees view.

Aggregation and indicator reports

Aggregation and indicator reports show results in a bar chart. The charts can be viewed in the following ways.

Aggregation:

  • Only available for trainee results
  • You can view results from multiple years in a bar chart.

We don’t publish single-year results based on responses from less than three trainees for data protection reasons. But the aggregate reports can be used to combine results for smaller specialties and locations.

Bar charts and table (indicator analysis) - Only available in the private tool

  • Only available for trainee results
  • Results are shown as a bar chart
  • Outlier flags are not shown in this view
  • Clicking the mean score shows the question responses that make up the score (question item reports).

Other report views

Question item reports

  • Clicking on the mean score shows individual question results in a separate bar chart.
  • The filters you have applied to previous reports carry through to the question item reports

Programme specific reports

  • Only available for the trainee results
  • Shows results for programme specific questions asked by the Royal Colleges and faculties
  • Results are displayed in a stacked bar chart
  • You can view all results or filter by deanery/postgraduate body or by training level (private reporting tool only).

How do I navigate between reports?

Pick the group you want to see results for in the top tab.

You can navigate to the different report views by using the tabs at the top of the page or the links underneath the 'other reports' links.

Click on a report to see the results for that report. For example, clicking into post specialty by post/board in the multiple years view brings up a report which shows results for each post speciality at each trust or board.

You can navigate to further reports through the main reports.

How do I use filters to build reports?

Once you have accessed a report you use filters to build a report specific to your interests.

To select a filter:

  • Click on the drop down box of a filter you’d like to apply
  • Select your filters from the drop down list or click search to bring up a full list of values.

You can use this function to search for and add multiple values:

  • You can use the search function at the top to find a particular value or scroll through the list.
  • To select a value, highlight it on the list and then click the single arrow at the top to move it to your selected list. You can do this to add multiple items.

Any filters you select will be reflected in a summary at the top of your report. This information is included when you export the report so you always know which report you’re looking at.

How do I download reports?

Once you have built your report you can download it in several formats by clicking on the ‘export’ button:

  • In question item reports, programme specific questions reports, multiple years and single year views, the button is at the bottom of the page.
  • In aggregation and bar charts and tables views (private tool only) there are separate export buttons under each table and chart.
