Education data tool help

How do I get to the results?

Upon opening the education data tool you will see the education data landing page. Select the 'Indicator - Trainee', 'Indicator - Trainer', 'Question' or 'Other NTS reports' tab at the top of the page, or one of the quick links to access the NTS results.

What types of reports can I access?

Main reports

The main reports show indicator results in a colour-coded grid. The results can be viewed in the following ways:

Multiple year view (trend analysis):

  • Only available for trainee results and trainer results prior to 2025.
  • Shows side-by-side results for all years from 2022 onwards.
  • Allows you to compare these results and identify any trends.
  • Right click into the score to drill through to see the specific question responses that make up the indicator score (question item reports).

Example query: have local changes impacted trainee perception of their training over time?

Data downloads:

  • Available for trainee and trainer results
  • Outliers are colour-coded (red for below outliers and green for above outliers)

Example query: I want to review all results for my programme in each trust.

You can quickly download all the data for the report you are looking at using the data downloads tab.

Aggregation reports

We don’t publish single-year results based on responses from less than three trainees for data protection reasons. But the aggregation reports can be used to combine trainee results for smaller specialties and locations.

Aggregation reports allow you to:

  • view results from multiple years in a table
  • aggregate together data across more than one NTS year and combine trusts/sites.
  • select reporting groups of interest
  • select indicators and benchmarks

Other report views

Question item reports

  • Right clicking on the mean score in an indicator report shows individual question results in a separate bar chart.
  • The filters you have applied to previous reports carry through to the question item reports.
  • Results can also be viewed in a table format and can be exported.
  • Multiple years can be selected to compare results for questions that are repeated each year.

Programme specific reports

  • Only available for the trainee results.
  • Show results for programme specific questions asked by the royal colleges and faculties.
  • Results are displayed in tables.
  • You can view all results or filter by deanery/postgraduate body or by training level.
  • Multiple years can be selected to compare results for questions that are repeated each year.

How do I navigate between reports?

Pick the group you want to see results for in the main menu or via one of the report shortcuts.

You can navigate to the different report views by using the tabs at the top of the page or the links in the 'Explore the data' and 'Other NTS reports' sections.

Click on a report to see the results. For example, clicking into post specialty by post/board in the multiple years view brings up a report which shows results for each post specialty at each trust or board.

You can navigate to further reports through the main reports by going back to the home page or by using the navigation menu at the top of the page.

How do I use filters to build reports?

Once you have accessed a report you use filters to build a report specific to your query.

To select a filter:

  • Click on the drop down box of a filter you’d like to apply
  • Select your filters from the drop down list or use the search function.

Any filters you select will be reflected in the results table. A summary of the filters applied is included when you export the report.
