This report presents findings from our analysis of trends in the number, demographics, and place of primary medical qualification of doctors holding a licence to practise in the UK.
It explores key issues across the UK workforce, including the potential impact of changing patterns in the number of doctors joining and leaving the register; and in applications and offers for postgraduate training posts.
It highlights shifting dynamics within the profession, including a focused look at the history of female doctors in the workforce, following the number of women surpassing men on the medical register for the first time in 2024; and a significant change in the number of doctors declaring a disability since 2021.
As policymakers across all four countries of the UK focus their efforts on developing a more sustainable model of patient care for the decades ahead, they must do so based on evidence. The data and insight set out in this report can provide a meaningful contribution to this work, for the benefit of patients and the profession alike.
