Evidence of qualifications

This section is for nationals from countries in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and nationals from all other countries with EC rights, who graduated from a medical school in

  • An EEA country, or
  • Switzerland.

It provides information about what evidence of qualificationsyou will need to provide when you submit your application for registration.

We will need your original primary medical qualification and, if appropriate, your licence to practise.

The other qualification evidence you must send us will depend upon

  • which type of registration you are applying for and
  • which country you qualified in.

This section will also tell you what types of registration you can apply for. If you have undertaken an internship in your own country you will not be eligible to apply for provisional registration in the UK.

Important notice for EEA graduates

The GMC introduced a new registration framework on 19 October 2007. Key changes include the abolition of limited registration and the introduction of approved practice settings (APS). International and UK medical graduates new to full registration, or returning to the register after prolonged absence from UK practice, must now work initially in practice settings approved by the GMC as suitable for this purpose. The purpose of approved practice settings is to ensure doctors new to full registration, or returning to the register after a prolonged period out of UK practice, work within environments where supportive and quality assured systems aimed at improving standards are in operation. We strongly advise EEA graduates to ensure they too work in an APS when they first take up employment in the UK under full registration. We also advise EEA doctors restored to the register after prolonged absence from UK practice to work initially in an APS.Read more about the New Registration Framework and Approved Practice Settings.
