Full registration

Full registration with a licence to practise

I started basic medical training

On or after 1 January 1986

Send us either a Título de Licenciado en Medicina y Cirugía, a Título de Licenciado en Medicina or a Título de Graduado/a en Medicina. This must be issued by the Ministerio de Educacion y Cultura (Ministry of Education and Culture) or the rector of your university.

On or before 31 December 1985

Send us either a Título de Licenciado en Medicina y Cirugía, a Título de Licenciado en Medicina or a Título de Graduado/a en Medicina issued by the Ministerio de Educacion y Cultura or the rector of your university. You must also send us one of the following.

  • A document confirming the training that led to the award of your primary qualification meets the standards detailed in Article 24 of the Directive. This must be issued by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture.

OR:

  • A document confirming you have effectively and lawfully been engaged in actual medical practice for at least three consecutive years during the five years immediately before the award of your certificate (as detailed in Article 23.1 of the Directive). This must be issued by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture or the competent authority of the EEA country or Switzerland where you are now working.

The title of my degree is not the same as the one in the Relevant European qualification list

If the title of your degree awarded in Spain is not the same as above you’ll need to send us a document confirming that your qualification is treated by Spain as equivalent to the Título de Licenciado en Medicina y Cirugía/ Título de Licenciado en Medicina/Título de Graduado/a en Medicina as detailed in Article 23.6 of the Directive. This document must come from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture.

Specialist registration

Entry onto the Specialist Register

I have a Relevant European Specialist qualification

Your specialty must be listed on our Relevant European qualification list by the country that awarded it. If your specialist qualification is listed, but you do not already hold full registration you should apply for full registration with a licence to practise and entry onto the Specialist Register at the same time.

I started specialist training on or after 1 January 1986

Send us a Título de Especialista (professional qualification of a specialist) issued by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture.

I started specialist training on or before 31 December 1985

You do not hold a Relevant European Specialist qualification. Please read our guidance on joining the UK specialist or GP register with Portfolio.

I don’t have a specialist qualification on the Relevant European qualification list

The title of my specialty or specialist certificate is not the same

If the title of your specialist certificate is not the same as the one above or the specialty listed is not the same as the specialty on our Relevant European qualification list, please read our guidance on joining the UK specialist register with Portfolio.

My training didn’t meet the standards of the Directive

If you’re a Spanish MESTOS doctor who completed specialist training in Spain before 1 January 1995, but your training did not meet the standards in Articles 25, 26 and 27 of the Directive, you need to send us both of the following.

  • A specialist qualification.
  • A document confirming you passed the test of professional competence organised in the context of the special regularisation measures contained in Royal Decree 1497/99 with the aim of verifying that you have a level of knowledge and competence comparable to that of doctors holding a Título de Especialista in the relevant specialty listed in Annex V of the Directive. This must be issued by the Spanish Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs or the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

GP registration

Entry onto the GP Register

I started GP training on or after 31 December 1994

Send us a Título de especialista en medicina familiar y comunitaria (specialist certificate in family and community medicine) issued by the Spanish Ministry of science, innovation and universities.

I started GP training on or before 30 December 1994
