Warnings

We issue warnings to indicate when the behaviour or performance of a physician associate (PA) or anaesthesia associate (AA):

  • represents a departure from the professional standards expected and should not be repeated
  • but restricting their practice is not necessary.

We do not issue warnings when the concerns relate solely to physical or mental health.

How are warnings issued?

Our senior decision makers can decide to give a warning to a PA or AA.

An associate’s tribunal may also issue a warning in cases where it found the fitness to practise of a PA or AA was not impaired but represents a departure from the professional standards expected and should not be repeated.

Warnings on the medical register

Warnings are visible on the online register for two years, along with a summary of why we issued it. After this, the warning will no longer be visible. However, we keep a record of it and can disclose it to employers on request.

Appealing a decision

PAs and AAs are able to appeal decisions to place a warning on their registration. Please see our appeals pages for more information.
