Approved curricula and assessment systems

List of approved specialty and subspecialty curricula systems

Four new specialties (three in Pathology and one in Surgery) added to the approved CCT list: March 2012

From 16 March 2012 the following specialties were added to the list of specialties in which the GMC issue CCTs within The Postgraduate Medical Education and Training (Amendment) Order of Council 2012.

  • Diagnostic neuropathology
  • Paediatric and perinatal pathology
  • Forensic histopathology
  • Vascular surgery

The GMC will be publishing approved curricula for these specialties in the near future (aim to complete this by autumn 2012).

Doctors wishing to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) in one of the above new specialties may do so from 16 March 2012, however they will need to submit a paper application, the online version of the application will be available shortly.

Guidance on dual CCTs

For trainees on pre-2007 CCT programmes (based on pre-existing curricula) the dual CCT requirements are laid in Specialty Register (SpR) curriculum documents. These remain relevant.

In April 2010, the GMC adopted the approvals granted by PMETB relating to training arrangements that started in or after August 2007. All requirements for programme approval remain in place.

Dual CCTs are available if the trainee can demonstrate achievement of the competences/outcomes of both the approved curricula and associated assessment systems. Both potential trainees and selection panels must be clear whether the appointment is for a dual or single CCT/s.

Appointment to dual CCT programmes is through competition.
