Approving curricula and assessments
We approve the curricula and assessments for 66 specialties and 32 sub-specialties:
We make sure curricula meet the standards we set in order to deliver high quality training.
Amending curricula or assessments
We must approve any changes to a curriculum or assessment that leads to the award of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
There are two stages to the process for approving a curriculum. For help or advice please contact us at quality@gmc-uk.org.
Stage one: Strategic support
If you are proposing any of the following
- a new curriculum
- a change to the curriculum’s purpose statement
- addition or removal of one or more high level outcomes of the curriculum
your curriculum purpose statement will need the endorsement of the Curriculum Oversight Group (COG).
This group tells us if the curriculum meets the needs of the four countries of the UK.
We will send your application to the next available meeting of the COG.
For more information or to make an application, please read Obtaining strategic support for your curriculum (pdf). To complete this form, please save a copy to your desktop before opening it. Please use Internet Explorer or an up to date version of Acrobat Reader when filling out the form. If you experience any difficulties please contact us.
Stage two: Curriculum approval
If you have gained the endorsement of the Curriculum Oversight Group (COG), or your proposal does not need their support, you can develop your curriculum and submit it to us for full approval.
We will send your application to the Curriculum Advisory Group (CAG), who make recommendations to us about whether curricula meet our standards.
If your proposal has any impact on resources (such as funding) we will also send it to a subcommittee of the Curriculum Oversight Group (COG). They will confirm whether or not the curriculum is feasible and deliverable.
The final decision will be made by the GMC’s Assistant Registrar.
Please contact us if you would like to add a submission to the 2017 schedule.
