End of transition for physician associates and anaesthesia associates
What is the end of transition and what does it mean?
We started regulating physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) on 13 December 2024. From this date, PAs and AAs have a two-year transition period to gain registration with us before the titles become protected.
From 13 December 2026 it will be a criminal offence to use the titles physician associate and anaesthesia associate without GMC registration. We refer to this as the end of transition.
Please be aware that from 13 December 2026 we will be removing our transitional policies on acceptable evidence to demonstrate knowledge and skills. This may increase the length of time it takes for you to apply for registration and there may be more steps and costs involved.
If you intend to apply for PA or AA registration, you should do so by 14 September 2026. This will give us enough time to make a decision about your application.
Any PA or AA not registered by 13 December 2026 must stop working in these roles until we have granted registration.
How will end of transition affect me as a PA or AA?
Whether this change affects you, and what action you need to take, depends on your individual circumstances. Please find information below that may be relevant to you.
If the advice below does not cover your individual circumstances, please contact us for further guidance.
