Do I need to complete an identity check?
Yes, all applicants for registration, restoration or re-entry to our registers must complete a GMC identity check.
When do I need to complete my identity check by?
We’re asking that you complete your identity check as soon as possible after you’ve received your invitation.
If you’re applying for registration, restoration, or re-entry to the register, you need to complete your identity check, and then log back into GMC Online, within three months of receiving your invite. If you don’t complete your ID check within this timescale we’re likely to refuse your application. We’re unable to extend this deadline.
If you choose to close your application or we refuse your application because you haven’t completed an ID check, you’ll receive a refund minus our scrutiny fee.

The GMC granted registration without an identity check during the pandemic. Do I still need to complete one?
Yes, you do still need to complete an ID check.
During the pandemic we suspended ID checks for doctors to comply with UK government guidance on safe workplaces and social distancing. At that time, after receiving doctor’s applications to join our registers and checking electronic versions of their qualifications and evidence, we approved their applications and granted their registration without an ID check.
We advised all those affected that they would still need to complete an ID check and added notes to their records and our online registers explaining this.
We will remove these notes when you’ve successfully completed your ID check.
