GMC reference numbers

What is a GMC reference number?

This reference number is their unique identifier. For PAs and AAs the GMC reference number starts with a letter ‘A’ followed by seven digits.

Check the GMC reference number

Just because a PA or AA has a GMC reference number, it does not mean they are currently on the register. We give PAs and AAs a reference number when we set up their online accounts, often before they apply for registration, they will keep these throughout their professional career. It's important you check their registration details on the online registers, and they have given you the correct GMC reference number.

Displaying names and GMC reference numbers

A PA or AA should share their GMC reference number when asked with patients, colleagues, or anyone else they have contact with in their professional role, in line with Paragraph 83 of Good medical practice.

You can help them do this by displaying their registered name and GMC reference number wherever possible – for example on name badges, door signs or webpages.
