How we assess your performance
What we compare against
We set questions at the level of a doctor with one year of experience on a training pathway working within the relevant scope of practice.
A doctor who has completed foundation year 1 would be expected to meet the required standard in the Foundation paper.
We compare your performance against a standard set mark.
We calculate this using the modified Angoff method. A panel of six to ten doctors decide what percentage of 'just passing' doctors would answer each question correctly. The average estimate for each question is then calculated and averaged for all the questions in the assessment.
Sample questions
We don’t publish previous assessments. These sample questions give an example of the format and level of questions asked.
We also hold pilot days to test our questions on volunteer candidates. This ensures they are reliable, set at the right level, and fair to the doctor being assessed.
