Am I eligible to apply?

Can I apply?

Your royal college or faculty will notify us if you’re eligible to apply for specialist or GP registration with a certificate of completion of training.

Once we've received their notification, we’ll email you to invite you to apply online through your GMC Online account. This will happen around four months before your expected training completion date.

We’ll send our invite to your GMC registered email address. You can check and update your email address through your GMC Online account.

Does my royal college or faculty need anything from me before they notify you?

You’ll most likely need to apply to your royal college or faculty first. You should contact them for instructions on their individual process.

Deadline for applications

You must make your application within 12 months of your training completion date. This applies to all doctors, including those who’ve completed their training but haven’t applied for the award of their certificate of completion of training.

If you don’t apply within 12 months of your training completion date, you won’t be eligible for a certificate of completion of training. You’ll only be eligible to apply for specialist or GP registration with a CESR or CEGPR through our specialty equivalence application routes.

I am not in an approved training post can I still apply for a certificate of completion of training?

A certificate of completion of training can only be awarded to a doctor who has successfully completed a GMC approved training programme.

If you leave the training programme without having successfully completed all assessment elements of the programme (including national professional exams), you won’t be eligible for a certificate of completion of training.
