Journey of a final year medical student studying in the UK
This journey reflects the steps a final year medical student goes through before starting F1 in the UK.
Before you begin your final year of medical school, your school will provide us with your details. We’ll create a unique GMC reference number for you, which you’ll keep for the rest of your career.
We’ll email you with your GMC reference number at the beginning of September. You’ll then apply to the UK Foundation Programme for a place on Foundation Year One (F1). You’ll make this application on Oriel.
During your final year, we’ll email you (at the same time as the rest of your medical school year group) to invite you to activate your GMC Online account and complete a digital identity check. Alternatively, you can arrange to attend an in-person identity check at our offices.
Then, in April of your final year, we’ll email to invite you to apply for provisional registration. You should apply as soon as you can through your GMC Online account.
Your medical school will tell us when you’ve graduated and we’ll contact you to confirm your registration with us. Once you can find your name on the medical register, you’re ready to start your F1 training.
