On 13 January 2021, following a clinical review, Dr Elrefaey sent a text message to a patient asking how she was when there was no clinical need to do so. When asked by the patient who he was and what his name was, he said he was the doctor who had seen her at the hospital but he provided a false name. This conduct / behaviour does not meet with the standards required of a doctor. It risks bringing the profession into disrepute and it must not be repeated. The required standards are set out in Good medical practice and associated guidance. In this case, paragraph 81 and 83 of Good medical practice (2024) is particularly relevant: 81 You must make sure that your conduct justifies patients’ trust in you and the public’s trust in your profession. 83 If a patient, colleague, or anyone else you have contact with in your professional role asks for your registered name and/or GMC reference number, you must give this information to them. Whilst this failing in itself is not so serious as to require any restriction on your registration, it is necessary in response to issue this formal warning.
