On 5 October 2024 and 29 September 2025, Dr Inigo Felipe Garate inappropriately prescribed a long-term course of the medication to a patient of childbearing age, without ensuring the patient’s negative pregnancy status.
Dr Inigo Felipe Garate also failed to undertake a face-to-face or remote consultation with the patient prior to prescribing the medication on 29 September 2025.
This conduct does not meet the standards required of a doctor. It risks undermining public protection, specifically patient safety, public confidence in the profession, and professional standards and conduct, and it must not be repeated. The required standards are set out in Good medical practice and associated guidance. In this case, paragraphs 3, 4, 7(d-f), 11, 30, 31 and 39 of Good medical practice are particularly relevant:
3. Doctors must keep up to date with guidelines and developments that affect their work.
4. Doctors must follow the law, our guidance on professional standards, and other regulations relevant to their work.
7. In providing clinical care, doctors must:
d. propose, provide or prescribe drugs or treatment (including repeat prescriptions) only when they have adequate knowledge of the patient’s health and are satisfied that the drugs or treatment will meet their needs
e. propose, provide or prescribe effective treatment based on the best available evidence
f. follow our more detailed guidance on professional standards, Good practice in proposing, prescribing, providing and managing medicines and devices, if they prescribe.
11. Doctors must keep their professional knowledge and skills up to date.
30. Doctors must make sure that the information they give patients is clear, accurate and up to date, and based on the best available evidence.
31. Doctors should check patients’ understanding of the information they’ve been given, and do their best to make sure they have the time and support they need to make informed decisions if they are able to.
39. Doctors should ask patients about any other care or treatment they are receiving – including over-the-counter medications – and check that any care or treatment they propose, provide or prescribe is compatible.
Whilst this failing in itself is not so serious as to require any restriction on Dr Felipe Garate’s registration, it is necessary, in response, to issue this formal warning.
This warning will be published on the medical register in line with the GMC’s publication and disclosure policy, which can be found at www.gmc-uk.org/disclosurepolicy.
