On 8 July 2021, Dr Mehat made derogatory and inappropriate comments about two Muslim patients which were recorded on a voicemail message. These comments were found to have objectively demonstrated hostility based on race/religion, though there was no subjective intent to do so.
This conduct does not meet with the standards required of a doctor. It risks bringing the profession into disrepute and it must not be repeated. The required standards are set out in Good Medical Practice and associated guidance. In this case, paragraph 65 of Good Medical Practice (2013) was particularly relevant:
65 You must make sure that your conduct justifies your patients’ trust in you and the public’s trust in the profession.
The latest version of Good Medical Practice reflects this at paragraph 81 and expands on the conduct that led to these proceedings, particularly within Domain 3.
Whilst this failing in itself is not so serious as to require any restriction on Dr Mehat’s registration, it is necessary in response to his misconduct to issue this formal warning.
