Statement following publication of the Infected Blood Inquiry report

Responding to the publication of the Infected Blood Inquiry’s final report, Charlie Massey, Chief Executive of the General Medical Council, said:

‘The suffering and ongoing challenges patients and their families have endured due to being given infected blood is unimaginable. The Infected Blood Inquiry highlights the tens of thousands of patients who were, tragically, harmed and let down by healthcare systems that should have been there to care for them.

‘Having been harmed, people should not have had to fight for so many years to obtain answers to what happened to them, their families and their loved ones.

‘We must learn the lessons this Inquiry has set out and take the opportunity to ensure the profession and future generations of doctors know about and learn from this tragedy so that history is not repeated.

‘We will now reflect on the full report and how we take forward the recommendations.’
