Planning for the future workforce

Our Chief Executive, Charlie Massey, has welcomed the Department of Health’s announcement about the launch of a single workforce strategy for the NHS in England.

Charlie said:

‘We welcome the government’s intention to produce an integrated workforce strategy for the health service in England. It’s critical we maintain a healthy supply of doctors into the UK medical profession in years to come, that we retain and support the high quality doctors already in the NHS, and that where appropriate doctors are able to work flexibly across a range of care boundaries and locations.

‘Professional regulation has a role to play in developing that strategy, given our unique role with the profession, the data we hold and the work we are doing with medical colleges to transform postgraduate curricula to help doctors meet the changing needs of patients. The government’s promise of regulatory reform offers regulators the flexibility to help support these plans, and we look forward to being part of this work.’

The General Medical Council (GMC) is the independent regulator of doctors in the UK.

The GMC works with doctors, their employers, their educators and others to:

  • set the standards of patient care and professional behaviours doctors need to meet.
  • make sure doctors get the education and training they need to deliver good, safe patient care.
  • check who is eligible to work as a doctor in the UK and check they continue to meet the professional standards it sets throughout their careers.
  • give guidance and advice to help doctors understand what’s expected of them.
  • investigate where there are concerns that patient safety, or the public’s confidence in doctors, may be at risk, and take action if needed.

The GMC is independent of government and the professionals it regulates, and is accountable to the UK Parliament.
