GMC welcomes decision to lift cap on medical school places
Responding to the government's decision to lift the cap on medical school places, Professor Colin Melville, Medical Director and Director for Education and Standards at the GMC said:
‘We’re pleased more students can begin their journey to join the next generation of doctors and hope this will support the expansion of the UK medical workforce.
‘It’s now more important than ever that medical schools are supported to provide a high standard of education, to meet the needs of future patients.
‘The introduction of our new Medical Licensing Assessment will ensure every student meets a common and consistent threshold for safe practice. We’ll keep working with medical schools to develop this exam covering core skills, knowledge and behaviour. A pass in the MLA will be required for any UK student graduating from 2024/5.’
