GMC response to the Independent Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Review

Today the IMMDS Review, led by Baroness Cumberlege, has published its First Do No Harm report into the harmful effects of medicines and medical devices.

In response to the report, Charlie Massey, Chief Executive of the General Medical Council, said:

‘The harrowing experiences of patients detailed in today’s report are a sobering reminder of the life-changing harm and side effects suffered from the use of these medicines and devices. Where things have gone wrong, patients have not always felt listened to by those in charge of the health system, and that is not acceptable.

‘We must all take stock of those failings so that patients can be assured that they will receive the high quality treatment they deserve. We will continue our work to make sure that the right processes are in place so patients and clinicians feel confident raising concerns and the system works seamlessly together to handle them.

‘We will reflect on the recommendations from the report and work collaboratively across healthcare to address issues identified by the review.'
