GMC responds to NHS England’s update on the Long Term Workforce Plan
Charlie Massey, Chief Executive of the General Medical Council, has responded to a letter from NHS England on their work to deliver the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan ambitions around Medical Associate roles.
In his reply he acknowledges current discussions and debate about the roles of physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) in the UK’s health services and welcomes NHS England’s commitment to work with partners to identify and address areas of concern.
He also provides an update on the GMC’s work to develop the regulatory model for PAs and AAs, and identifies several issues that it would be helpful for NHS England and those responsible in each of the devolved countries to collectively address, to aid further engagement and discussions.
The regulator goes on to highlight the GMC’s progress in developing the policies and processes needed to regulate PAs and AAs, as it waits for the UK government to lay the legislation required for regulation to begin.
