GMC launches Council member recruitment

The General Medical Council (GMC) is recruiting for two new members of its governing body, the GMC Council.

Council members are responsible for setting the GMC’s strategy and goals, and oversee the work of the regulator. The Council has 12 members, six lay* and six medical**, and the current vacancies are for one of each.

Professor Sir Terence Stephenson, Chair of the GMC, said: ‘Being part of the GMC Council is an extremely rewarding role. New members will be joining at an important and challenging time, as we work to support doctors and to protect patients in health systems that are under pressure like never before.

‘We are looking for candidates who will relish the challenge, and who will contribute to driving and setting strategy, setting high level policies and making sure the GMC’s charitable and statutory purposes continue to be fulfilled.’

Council members need to commit to up to three days each month. Successful candidates will serve an initial term of four years, starting on 1 January 2019.
