GMC continues to meet all standards of Good Regulation

The General Medical Council (GMC) has continued to meet all 18 Standards of Good Regulation following an independent performance review by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

The review considered how the medical regulator has performed against standards for areas including guidance, education, registration, fitness to practise and equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).

Charlie Massey, Chief Executive of the GMC, said:

‘We welcome the PSA’s findings, which highlight our commitment to being an effective, relevant, and compassionate regulator.

‘The PSA praised our strong performance in equality, diversity and inclusion. This included our work with the NMC on new resources for maternity teams, to help them better consider health inequalities and individuals’ needs, such as language and communication barriers.

‘The report further recognises the extensive engagement we undertook with stakeholders when designing the Physician Associate Registration Assessment (PARA) ahead of us regulating the profession.

‘While encouraged by these findings, we are not complacent, and remain focused on continued improvements to how we support the professions we regulate, so patients receive safe, high-quality care.’

The PSA for Health and Social Care oversees statutory bodies like the GMC who regulate health and social care professionals in the UK. It assesses performance, conducts audits, scrutinises decisions, and reports to Parliament. It also sets standards for organisations holding voluntary registers for health and social care occupations and accredits those that meet them.
