GMC appoints Professor Pushpinder Mangat to post of Medical Director and Director of Education and Standards

The General Medical Council (GMC) has appointed Professor Pushpinder Mangat to be its next Medical Director and Director of Education and Standards. Professor Mangat will work closely with the current Director, Professor Colin Melville, in the run up to his retirement in June 2025.

Professor Mangat will join the GMC in 2025, at a date to be confirmed. The appointment comes following a competitive recruitment process, led by Gatenby Sanderson, after an extensively advertised campaign on a range of platforms across all four countries of the UK.

A registered doctor and previously a consultant in intensive care medicine and neuroanaesthesia, Professor Mangat is currently Deputy Chief Medical Officer in Wales, where his focus includes medical and wider clinical education.

He studied medicine at the University of Birmingham, qualifying in 1983, and went on to train in both general medicine and anaesthesia and intensive care in Llanelli, Swansea, Cardiff, Birmingham and Cambridge.

After undertaking several senior clinical management roles, he became the Deputy Medical Director in Swansea from 2011 to 2018. He was then appointed as the first Medical Director in the newly formed Special Health Authority - Health Education and Improvement Wales. He remained in post until May 2024, when he became Deputy Chief Medical Officer in Wales.

Welcoming Professor Mangat, GMC Chief Executive Charlie Massey said:

‘We look forward to welcoming Professor Mangat to the GMC. His expertise and wealth of experience will be essential as we continue our work to set the standards and professional behaviours for all doctors, PAs, and AAs working in the UK; and in ensuring that all those we regulate have the education and training needed to deliver good, safe patient care.’

Professor Mangat said:

‘I am both delighted and humbled to be joining the GMC as Medical Director and Director of Education and Standards.

‘Having worked in the health service across numerous roles and more recently with a focus on medical and wider clinical education, I am looking forward to bringing my experience to the important conversations ahead, and in particular how we develop the future of medical education and career development for all GMC registrants.’
