Former Chief Executive Niall Dickson awarded CBE

Dame Denise Platt, deputy Chair of the General Medical Council, has welcomed the awarding of the CBE to former Chief Executive Niall Dickson.

Dame Denise said:

‘The GMC today is radically different from the organisation that Niall Dickson joined in 2010. It is in no small part down to Niall's passion, drive and determination that we have developed into the organisation we are today.

‘During Niall's time as CEO, the GMC transformed every area of itself, as we worked to reposition the GMC from what has historically been seen as a medical organisation to one rightly focused on patient safety and quality of care. Niall drove our efforts to become more outward facing, more proactive and more collaborative across everything that the GMC does.

‘Niall also oversaw some of the biggest changes to the way we regulate since the GMC was first established in 1858, from revalidation to the establishment of the MPTS. Likewise, the power to test the language capability of doctors from the EU was a key measure in protecting patients across the UK, our work to support vulnerable doctors and the introduction of the Employer Liaison Service and Regional Liaison Service. His capable stewardship drove a step-change in patient safety and left the GMC on strong footing as we move into the next phase of our journey.’
