Credentials
GMC credentials formally recognise a doctor's expertise, skills or experience in a specific area of practice. They address areas of patient safety or service need.
They are standalone qualifications, unlike sub-specialties and special interest areas included in specialty training.
GMC credentials are additional endorsements marked on a doctor’s entry on the publicly available register. They are recorded separately from specialties and sub-specialities and do not affect a doctor's registration status.
Training vs recognition
GMC credentials describe the outcomes and standards expected of doctors working in a specific area of practice. There are two routes:
- training – where specific credential training is completed
- recognition – where evidence of relevant skills and experience, which can be evaluated against the standards, is provided.
Credential curricula
We have approved the following curricula, designed by credential bodies, as they meet the standards we set:
- Mechanical thrombectomy
- Rural and remote
- Specialist Pain medicine
