The experience of working within a different professional framework
What were the key findings?
We commissioned a study to explore the experiences of doctors who qualified outside the UK (including those from the European Economic Area). We wanted to see how they adapt to working under our professional and ethical rules.
The study used a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods. It also included a review of the information we provide to doctors who want to register with us.
The main findings show that:
-
Doctors who qualified abroad have difficulty accessing the information and support they need to follow our guidance in practice.
-
The study recommends providing more targeted information during induction and training.
-
Ongoing mentoring would be highly beneficial for doctors who qualified in another country and are now beginning work in the UK.
A smaller sample of UK-qualified doctors showed that while this support would help all new doctors, it is more likely to already be available to those who trained in the UK.
