Our data about doctors with a European primary medical qualification

Insight purpose

Our health services benefit considerably from doctors who have come from all around the world to practise medicine in the UK.

Following the UK’s vote to leave the European Union (EU), many organisations need more data on the roles and numbers of European doctors in the UK.

Our analysis of the data we have on EEA-qualified doctors in the UK includes:

  • what areas these doctors work in
  • what age they are
  • how long they have been working in the UK.

The report may be of use to those who want to understand more about the role of EEA-qualified doctors to inform policy and planning in the health sector.

What were the key findings?

As of 30 June 2017:

  • 2,057 EEA graduates joined the UK medical register (compared to 2,048 as of June 2016)
  • The total number of EEA graduates practising in the UK was 21,609 (compared to 21,539 as of June 2016).
