Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

GMC Online - secure area for doctors

GMC Online is a special password-protected area of our website designed to make administration easier for doctors.

I have a GMC reference number. How do I set up a GMC Online account?

To activate your account, your record must contain your email address and other verifiable information (for example, your date of birth or bank account number). If your email address is not on your record then you will not be able to activate your account straight away. Please contact us so we can update your details.

If there isn't enough information that we can verify on your record then, for security reasons, we will need to issue a PIN to your registered address (a password will be sent to you by email). You will be able to activate your account once you receive your PIN.

Activate your account

Once you have activated your account, you will only need your GMC reference number and your password to log in. For security purposes, you will be asked to provide a memorable word the first time you log in.

I don’t have a GMC reference number. How do I set up a GMC Online account?

If you do not have a GMC reference number you will need to decide what type of application you want to make (including applications for registration and the PLAB test) and read the relevant guidance in our Applications section. You will be given instructions on how to set up a GMC Online account to make your application.

What happens if I forget my password or PIN?

Existing users

If you have already activated your account by logging in for the first time, but you have forgotten your password, you can use the forgotten password process.

You will be asked to enter your GMC reference number and the email address that we have on your record. A new password will be sent to your email account, and you will be able to use this to log in straight away.

New users

If you have been issued a PIN and have forgotten your PIN or password before you have activated your account, please contact us for replacement log in details.

If you were not issued a PIN, you do not need to request replacement log in details.

If you still cannot log in

If you are still unable to log in to GMC Online, please contact us.

Please remember that we cannot access your PIN or password.

Memorable word

The first time you log in, you will be asked to choose a memorable word (for example, your mother’s maiden name) and a hint, or a question to help you remember this if you forget (for example, 'What is my mother’s maiden name?'). You should try to use something that you can’t forget and that will make sense to you in the future.

You will use this memorable information to confirm some transactions, such as changing your password.

If you have previously entered memorable information, you will still need to provide a new memorable word here. This will replace the five questions and answers that you entered before and make our security checks easier for you.
