Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Employer Liaison Service

The Employer Liaison Service (ELS) was formed as a result of the successful Affiliates pilot, carried out in London and West Yorkshire from 2008 - 2009, and the 'Closer Working' model developed with Scottish Medical Directors that ran from 2009 - 2010.

The ELS creates closer working relationships between the GMC and employers.  We work to:

  • establish good links with Responsible Officers and their teams to support two way exchange of information about under performing doctors, therefore improving patient safety and the quality of referrals
  • share our data about under performing doctors, including regional trends
  • help Responsible Officers and their teams understand GMC thresholds and procedures
  • provide support to Responsible Officers and employers in relation to revalidation.

There are 15 Employer Liaison Advisers (ELAs) who will cover their own assigned areas.  These are;

  • North East - Helen Dolan
  • North West - Blake Dobson
  • Yorkshire and the Humber - Dr Colin Pollock
  • East Midlands - Iain Whittle
  • West Midlands - Jill Williams
  • East of England - Andy Lewis
  • London (3 ELAs) - Dr Surendra Deo / Ingrid Southorn / Antony Americano
