Evidence of your knowledge of English

When you apply for registration with a licence to practise we need to be satisfied you have the necessary knowledge of English to practise safely in the UK. We need to be confident you can communicate effectively in English, so you do not put the safety of your patients at risk.

Communicating includes speaking, reading, writing and listening.

This guide provides information on the different ways you can demonstrate your knowledge of English if you are:

  • applying to sit the PLAB test,
  • an international medical graduate applying for registration with a licence to practise.

The evidence needed to apply for PLAB may be different than for registration, so please read the information carefully to see what options are available to you.

Each chapter of this guide gives details of a different type of evidence of your knowledge of English. Select the one that's relevant to you.

Why read this guide?
To find out how we assess knowledge of English and what evidence you need to give us that we will accept.
