When we assess whether an overseas primary medical qualification is acceptable

We assess an overseas primary medical qualification (PMQ) when:

  • a doctor asks us to – for example, because their awarding body is not available to select when setting up a GMC Online account
  • we identify the need to as part of assessing information provided by a doctor when setting up a GMC Online account, or as part of an application
  • we receive a request from the awarding body or institution (for example because we have not assessed its PMQ before)
  • evidence we receive raises a question about whether an overseas PMQ which we accept continues to satisfy our criteria

An assessment of an individual’s PMQ may result in the qualification being found:

  • acceptable at this time
  • not currently acceptable.

We will share the outcome of our assessment with the individual or institution concerned.
