Case Study

Background

Two weeks ago, Marlena was involved in a car crash, the nature of which raised concerns about her fitness to drive. At a check-up last week, she told Dr Williams about the incident and said she’d been experiencing memory issues for some time. Marlena reported feeling frightened and shared concerns that her memory issues are affecting her driving.

During that consultation, Dr Williams made an interim assessment of Marlena’s fitness to drive and explained sensitively to her that her current symptoms may impair her ability to drive safely. She advised Marlena to stop driving until a follow-up appointment can be arranged to assess her level of impairment. Reluctantly, Marlena agreed to stop driving.

Today, Suzie, the GP receptionist, has approached Dr Williams with a concern. She explains that Marlena was seen leaving the clinic in her car after coming in yesterday for a blood test. Suzie says that Marlena appeared confused in the car park and nearly caused an accident as she drove away, alarming both staff and other patients.

Dr Williams is careful not to share any confidential details with Suzie about what was discussed in Marlena’s last appointment but reassures Suzie that she will address the situation promptly and with care. Dr Williams thanks Suzie and begins to consider the most appropriate next steps.
