Case Study

Background

Dr Sharma’s colleague, Dr Hargreaves, recently returned to work following the death of his wife. Since his return, he’s been the subject of a complaint by a patient. The patient complained because Dr Hargreaves prescribed them a medication that they’re allergic to, which is clear on their record.

This morning, Adrian – the receptionist at the surgery – comes to Dr Sharma’s consulting room. Adrian explains that Dr Hargreaves looks very tired today, smells strongly of alcohol and that his partner saw Dr Hargreaves leaving the local pub very late last night. Adrian shares concerns about Dr Hargreaves making another mistake, particularly if he’s drinking heavily before shifts.

Dr Sharma is in a difficult position because she recognises that her colleague is going through a lot. And Dr Hargreaves has told her that work is keeping him going and that he doesn’t want to take any more time off.
