We recognise that this is a very difficult and worrying time for doctors. Our professional standards provide a framework for ethical decision making in a wide range of situations. They should be followed as far as practical in the circumstances. We're regularly updating our advice for doctors as the situation develops.
Confidentiality: patients' fitness to drive and reporting concerns to the DVLA or DVA
If a patient has a condition that could affect their fitness to drive, it’s their duty to report it. But as their doctor you have responsibilities as well.
This guidance sets out how to speak to your patient about the issue, what to do if you’re not sure about their fitness to drive, and the step to take if a patient continues to drive after you’ve advised them to stop.
This guidance came into effect 25 April 2017.
