Work experience and doctors in training

How can I get relevant work experience?

Students can gain practical experience and find out more about a career in medicine through work observation. For more information visit Volunteering England or Volunteering Matters.

What is a doctor in training?

Doctors in training are those who either:

  • are in foundation year two
  • are in a GMC approved training programme
  • have a fixed term specialty training appointment (FTSTA), or
  • have a locum appointment for training (LAT).

Postgraduate medical education organisations are responsible for doctors in training. These include NHS England, Health Education and Improvement Wales, NHS Education for Scotland and Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency.
