Take part in writing and standard setting events

We’re looking for volunteer doctors to help us create practical and written assessment material. We also need doctors to help us standard set questions.

The content will be used in our tests of competence and revalidation assessments, and your support will help us ensure content is up to date, fair and valid.  

Taking part is an opportunity for you to gain professional development evidence that can be used in applications or appraisals. 

You’ll receive £350 for attending, as well as reasonable travel expenses. You’ll also receive a certificate after the event. 

Events are held throughout the year in London and Manchester.

Writing events

Writing events

During the event, you’ll write new single best answer questions and clinical exam scenarios. You may also edit existing content, so prior writing experience is preferred but not essential. 

We aim to write for doctors practising within a certain specialty, with most questions and scenarios being suitable for all grades in that specialty. 

Eligible doctors must:

  • be registered with a licence to practise in the UK
  • be C/ST3 or above and have worked recently in the specialty invited to the day
  • ideally have taken part in a GMC pilot event before
  • not have any fitness to practise concerns

Structure and timings:

Writing events are held over 1 or 2 days. The structure of each event might vary, but an average day includes:

  • Arrive at 09:45 for registration
  • Briefing
  • Writing and editing part 1
  • Lunch is provided
  • Writing and editing part 2
  • The day usually ends around 16:00
Standard setting

Standard setting

You’ll use the modified Angoff method to set the standard for questions in certain specialties.  

We’ll spend the morning exploring this method and scoring questions. The afternoon will involve group discussion and agreeing final outcomes. 

Eligible doctors must:

  • be registered with a licence to practise in the UK
  • be ST6 or above, or pre-CCT equivalent, depending on your specialty
  • have worked recently in the specialty invited to the day
  • ideally have experience of working with or supervising resident doctors
  • ideally have experience of standard setting / using the Angoff method
  • not have any fitness to practise concerns
