Fraudulent activity

Your safety is important to us. If you receive an email that appears to come from us but seems suspicious or fraudulent, we encourage you to take action.

Fraudulent activity may include emails, text messages, phone calls, websites, or social media messages that falsely claim to be from us. Or request personal or financial information.

Report to Report Fraud UK

Report Fraud is the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime. Reporting suspicious activity helps authorities investigate and prevent further incidents. The Report Fraud website provides guidance on how to report different types of fraudulent activity.

Here are some of the ways you can report fraudulent activity to Report Fraud:

Please inform us as well

As well as reporting to Report Fraud, please let us know about any emails or calls that you receive fraudulently claiming to be from the GMC. This allows us to investigate internally, identify any misuse of our name, and take appropriate steps. Where appropriate, we will also report the matter to Report Fraud.

We take all reports seriously and appreciate your help in keeping you and our other registrants safe. If you’re ever unsure about an email claiming to be from us, please contact us before taking any action.

What we will never do

We will never:

  • ask for an unsolicited money transfer into a bank account. Find out more information about GMC fees
  • email you from a commercial email address eg Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo etc. Our email addresses end in @gmc-uk.org
  • offer a registrant a position at a hospital or surgery; we can only register doctors, AA’s and PAs to the UK medical register
  • email, text or write to a registrant proactively offering them registration for a fee. Registrants have to apply for registration.
