Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Applying for a review of our decision on your application for entry onto the Specialist Register with a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration or entry onto the GP Register with a Certificate of Eligibility for GP Registration

This page is to help doctors who were unsuccessful with their application for entry onto the Specialist Register with a CESR or entry onto the GP Register with a CEGPR and want to apply for a review of our decision.

Your application for a review will be an online application. At the end of this guidance you will be given a link to enter our secure web portal.

You may apply for a review if:

  • You have additional relevant documentary evidence that you have not previously submitted that addresses the shortfalls set out in our decision

Or

  • You consider that there has been a procedural defect or other unfairness in the way in which we have processed your application or made our decision. (For example, you feel that the evidence you submitted met our requirements but we did not take it into account when we made our decision.)

You must submit your application for a review within 90 days of the date on your decision letter.

When we have received your review application and supporting evidence we will make a decision based on the evidence you provide.

We may, if appropriate, send your application to the Royal College or Faculty (opens in a new window) for your specialty and ask them if the additional evidence you have supplied changes their recommendation.

There are three possible outcomes to a review application:

  • entry onto the Specialist Register or GP Register and an award of the certificate that you originally applied for
  • a change to the required further training and experience that we set out in your decision letter
  • no change

If more than 90 days has passed since we issued your decision letter, you will need to submit a reapplication, rather than apply for a review. To give yourself sufficient time to prepare for a resubmission you may wish to reapply. The fee for a reapplication and a review is the same.

Read the guidance for reapplying for entry onto the Specialist Register with a CESR or CEGPR (opens in a new window)

Important notice

If you received your decision on or before 22 March 2011 you will need to apply using a hard copy application form. Please contact us and we will email you a copy of the form.

The following guidance is still applicable apart from instructions specific to completing the application in GMC Online.
