Information for LETBs/deaneries regarding the setting of submission dates

When can a revalidation recommendation be made?

Changing a doctor’s submission date

You will find comprehensive information on our website about revalidation for trainee doctors. This includes guidance on when a trainee will revalidate, and on changes to their expected completion of training date.

Delaying a submission date

  • You should wait until a doctor is within 120 days of their submission date before submitting a deferral request as per the criteria for deferral requests.
  • You will be required to give a date by which you think the doctor will be ready to revalidate.
  • Further information about deferral requests can be found in the criteria for deferral requests.

Bringing a submission date forward

  • If the new date is within 365 days of the original submission date:
    • submit a recommendation as the doctor will be under notice.
  • If the new date is more than 365 days before the original submission date:
    • submit a request to change the doctor’s submission date by completing a 'Request to change a doctors submission date' form;
    • we will only be able to change a date to minimum of 120 days and a maximum of 365 days from the date of approval of your request. We will then issue notice.
  • Given the frequency of completion of training date changes, we would ask that you only contact us six months in advance of the new completion of training date.

How are submission dates set for trainees?

  • We set the submission date of doctors new to the register at between four years and six months and five years from their date of gaining full registration with a licence to practise.
