Guidance for referees
Structured reports support applications for Certificates of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or Certificates of Eligibility for GP Registration (CEGPR)
We advise that you seek permission before nominating a referee, and send them a copy of your CV.
What information should my referee include?
As your application is assessed against the curriculum for a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in your specialty you should ask your referee to familiarise themselves with the current curriculum in your specialty and the standard required for a CCT. If you’re not applying in a CCT specialty, they should look at the curriculum for the nearest specialty.
Your referee needs to provide information about you based on their direct knowledge. For reports to be as useful as possible, they should be detailed and give specific examples of how your referee has seen you demonstrate the breadth of competencies in the relevant CCT curriculum, under the four domains of Good medical practice.
If your referee doesn’t have direct knowledge of your experience, they can enter ‘No direct knowledge’ in that section.
What should my clinical or medical director include?
You must include your clinical or medical director as one of your referees, even if they don’t work with you directly.
They’re expected to comment on the outcome of the work of your unit, your involvement in trust activities and any issues of clinical governance or disciplinary action. We recommend that they talk to your colleagues before completing the form if they don’t know you personally.
In our experience, an application is unlikely to be successful without a structured report from your clinical or medical director.
