Once you've read and understood this guide, you're ready to apply through GMC Online.
Your GMC Online account
If you already have a GMC Online account, you can log in and apply by choosing 'My Registration' then 'My Applications'.

Adding your specialty
Once you’ve logged into GMC online and started your application, you’ll be asked to enter the name of your specialty.
• If you’re applying for a Portfolio application in General Practice you won’t see this page.
• If you’re applying in a CCT specialty, please choose your specialty from the dropdown list.
• If you’re applying in a non-CCT specialty, please type the title of your specialty in the box.
Next, you’ll be asked to confirm your specialty details are correct. Once you have confirmed this, it won’t be possible to change your specialty without withdrawing the whole application and starting again, therefore it is important you make sure this is correct.
Evidence of your qualifications
You’ll need to enter the details of any specialist medical qualification(s) and any other relevant qualifications you have. You should upload evidence of the qualifications you have listed and the curriculum or syllabus you followed.
Listing your evidence
In the evidence section of your application, you must list each piece of evidence you intend to submit. If you don’t intend to submit evidence for a section, you need to change the status of that section, or you won’t be able to submit your application.
This part of the online application is divided up to match the specialty specific guidance that you should have already read.
So that your application can be processed effectively, it’s vital you follow the guidance below, or your evidence may be returned to you:
- Provide recent evidence - as stated in the Specialty Specific Guidance Evidence that is older will hold less weight in your application, so you may not need to include this.
- Group your evidence – you don’t need to upload every document separately and should group your evidence according to our User guide – you shouldn’t provide more than 150 uploads in your application. To be within the maximum uploads, evidence should be grouped by type and institution. If your evidence is not grouped appropriately, your evidence may not be accepted.
- Describe your documents – make sure your documents have a title that exactly matches what is listed on your evidence pro-forma. Please provide a concise and accurate description for each upload – if your evidence isn’t clear, it will not be accepted
- Don’t duplicate – duplicated evidence will not be accepted, so we ask that you don’t provide the same piece of evidence more than once. If you have a piece of evidence which is relevant to more than one area of your application, you can cross-reference evidence in the ‘Description’ column.
Help us complete your application quickly
Your application can take between three to six months before it’s complete and ready to be sent for evaluation.
To help us process your application quickly you should:
- submit any additional evidence within the deadline set by your adviser
- speak to your referees before you give us their names and make sure their contact information is up to date
- don’t submit your online application until you’re ready and your evidence is prepared. The main reason applications are unsuccessful is because they are incomplete and the evidence requested in our guidance hasn’t been provided.
You have 24 months to submit your application after you’ve started it in GMC Online. This is because we recommend that you use your online application as an electronic portfolio, uploading evidence as you gather it.
You’ll need to make sure you keep updating parts of your application over the 12-month period; otherwise, the application will automatically expire.
Keeping your application open means you need to make a material change to the application. GMC Online won’t recognise uploading a document as an update. Therefore, you need to edit information in your application to keep it active. You must amend information within the application. For example, entering information into a text box/drop down box, or change a status of a section in the application.
Submitting your application
Before you submit your completed application, we'll ask you to pay a fee.
You will not be able to submit your application without paying the fee.

You may be eligible to a refund of part of your fee, if you withdraw your application. A member of the team will confirm the refund amount.
