Should doctors being reviewed be concerned?
If a doctor is one of the 3,000 cases being reviewed, should they be concerned? What do they need to do?
We have nothing to suggest that any of the other doctors who used the route that Zholia Alemi abused are anything but honest, dedicated and hardworking doctors. But it’s important – for those doctors’ sake as well as patients – that we carry out checks and reassure the public.
We understand that doctors who accessed the medical register using the Commonwealth route may be concerned about the checks we’re carrying out. We are writing to all of them to let them know and to reassure them, that with bona fide documentation, they have nothing to be concerned about.
We have also told them that they don't need to do anything in response to our correspondence. We already hold copies of doctors’ documents and many of the checks required can be done by GMC staff. We will use the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates – the organisation that checks healthcare credentials worldwide – to verify records with the relevant bodies.
