GMC publishes its strategy on equality and fairness

The General Medical Council (GMC) has published a strategy outlining its work on equality, diversity and inclusion.

The GMC’s Equality, diversity and inclusion strategy highlights work already undertaken by the regulator, as well as its future commitments for the period up to 2020. The GMC’s four main objectives, detailed in the strategy, are to take steps to make sure that it:

  • acts on equality, diversity and inclusion issues associated with its corporate strategy
  • carries out its regulatory activities fairly
  • provides leadership and uses its influence to help address inequalities for doctors and patients
  • is an inclusive organisation.

"The principles of equality, diversity and inclusion are critical to us being an effective regulator, and we want those we work with and for to be confident in us."

Susan Goldsmith

Chief Operating Officer

Susan Goldsmith, the GMC’s Chief Operating Officer, said:

‘We understand and value the diversity within the medical profession and recognise the importance of supporting doctors to serve a diverse population across the UK. We have already made a lot of progress in this very important area, but there is more we can do.

‘The principles of equality, diversity and inclusion are critical to us being an effective regulator, and we want those we work with and for to be confident in us.

‘The work we do can fundamentally affect someone's livelihood, so it is important they are listened to, understood, can access our services, and that they have faith in the system that is there to protect and support them.

‘Of course, we have to be compliant with equality and human rights legislation, but being fair goes way beyond just meeting legal requirements . It is an integral part of everything that we do.’

The GMC’s equality, diversity and inclusion strategy is available on the GMC’s website.
