Background to the play

The making of the play

Wood for the trees centres on Marie, a young woman with Down's syndrome, and the problems that she faces trying to access appropriate healthcare.

The play was commissioned by the GMC for use on a tour of Forum Theatre events around the UK. Doctors, people with learning disabilities and their carers were invited to these events.

At the events, a performance of the play was followed by a facilitated interactive discussion during which audience members were encouraged to step onto the stage, take the place of the doctor, and explore how a change in the doctor's behaviour could impact on the outcome for Marie, and the healthcare she receives.

At the end of the tour, the play was filmed so it could be used for the interactive learning sessions on this website.
